The programme, held at Anguwan Dan Madami in Fatika Ward, Zaria Local Government Area, focused on improving awareness of maternal health, particularly the recognition of danger signs during pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period.
Facilitating the session, Metro Safiya Magaji educated participants on the importance of seeking immediate medical attention whenever complications occur. She explained that early recognition of danger signs is critical to preventing maternal and newborn deaths.
Magaji also sensitized participants on Birth Preparedness and Complication Readiness (BPCR), highlighting the need for early and regular antenatal care, delivery under the supervision of skilled health personnel, financial preparedness, identification of a nearby health facility and arranging transportation before labour begins.
She stressed that proper planning for childbirth and timely access to quality healthcare are essential in ensuring safer pregnancies and healthy outcomes for both mothers and babies.
The facilitator urged pregnant women to make full use of available maternal healthcare services and avoid delays in seeking professional medical care whenever warning signs appear.
She further appealed to mothers-in-law, husbands and other family members to provide adequate support for pregnant women by encouraging antenatal care attendance, proper nutrition, health facility delivery and postnatal care.
Participants actively engaged in the interactive session by asking questions and sharing experiences on maternal health challenges affecting their communities.
They also received practical guidance on supporting pregnant women throughout pregnancy, childbirth and after delivery.
The participants commended the Faith and Cultural Champions Group of AMWA for organizing the sensitization programme and pledged to share the knowledge gained with other women and families in their communities.
The sensitization forms part of AMWA's ongoing campaign to strengthen Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) awareness among married adolescent girls and young women, promote safe motherhood and contribute to reducing preventable maternal and newborn deaths across Kaduna State.
