The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, Ph.D, GCON, on Saturday performed the groundbreaking of six key development projects in Zaria Federal Constituency, aimed at boosting education, skills development, and community growth.
The projects include the College of Agriculture and Animal Science, a Sports Academy, a Technical and Vocational Training College, a Centre for Management Development, a Women’s Development Centre, and new male and female hostels at the Nigerian Institute of Leather Science and Technology (NILEST).
Speaker Abbas also unveiled fully funded scholarships for 250 students undertaking HND, OND, and ND programmes in Leather Technology at NILEST.
The statement, signed and issued by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Speaker, Musa Abdullahi Krishi, and made available to newsmen, quoted Speaker Abbas as saying that the projects represent “a new phase of development built on vision, collective hope, and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.”
He noted that the College of Agriculture and Animal Science would equip young people with modern skills in crop production, livestock management, and agribusiness — capabilities crucial for food security and regional stability.
On the Technical and Vocational Training College, he said the institution would produce skilled manpower for sectors such as technology, construction, and automotive engineering.
The Speaker explained that the Sports Academy would nurture talent, promote discipline, and open opportunities for youth to pursue careers in sports.
He added that the Centre for Management Development would serve as a leadership hub to strengthen governance capacity, while the Women’s Development Centre would promote entrepreneurship, health awareness, and women’s participation in socio-economic life.
According to him, the new NILEST hostels and the 250-student scholarship scheme are designed to expand research capacity, enhance technical learning, and strengthen Zaria’s position in the global leather industry.

Garba Datti Muhammad; Chairman, House Committee on Welfare and Services, Hon. Amos Daniel; Chairman, House Committee on Army, Hon. Aminu Balele Kurfi; Deputy Chairman, House Committee on Aviation, Hon. Suleiman Yahaya Richifa; and Chairman of Zaria Local Government, Engr. Jamil Ahmad Muhammad.
