The Member representing Zaria City Constituency in the Kaduna State House of Assembly, Hon. Mahmud Lawal Isma’il, has commended the Kaduna State Government for commencing the payment of compensation to persons affected by the Zaria Flood and Gully Erosion Control Project.
Hon. Mahmud made the remarks on Wednesday while witnessing the continuation of compensation payments to Project Affected Persons (PAPs) under the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) Project in Zaria.
He said the compensation exercise demonstrated the commitment of the administration of Governor Uba Sani to protecting communities, improving livelihoods and providing climate-resilient infrastructure across the state.
According to him, the compensation covers not only land and structures affected by the project but also economic trees and crops affected by the intervention.
He conveyed the appreciation of the people of Zaria to Governor Uba Sani for ensuring that affected persons were adequately compensated, while urging the beneficiaries to use the funds judiciously for their personal advancement and the development of their communities.
The lawmaker also called on residents and community leaders to continue supporting the project to ensure its successful completion.
The Kaduna State Project Management Unit (SPMU) of ACReSAL has commenced compensation payments to Project Affected Persons under the Resettlement Action Plan (RAP) for the Zaria Gully Erosion and Flood Control Project.
The project, which covers approximately 11.6 kilometres, involves the construction of concrete drainage channels, culverts, fencing and bio-remediation measures aimed at controlling gully erosion, mitigating flooding and protecting lives and property.
The affected areas include Kofan Jatau, Unguwan Zaria, Unguwan Alkali, Kofan Doka, Unguwan Fatika, Kaura, Amaru, Magume, Kamacha, Tukur-Tukur, Kwarin Dangoma and other locations along the Zaria axis.
Speaking during the exercise, the State Project Coordinator of Kaduna ACReSAL, Hadiza Ibrahim Halid, Esq., commended Governor Uba Sani for providing the funds required to facilitate the compensation payments.
She described the intervention as one of the major environmental restoration projects in Kaduna State, saying it would address persistent gully erosion and flooding while improving the socio-economic well-being of residents in affected communities.
The District Head of Zaria Da Kewaye, Alhaji Sambo Shehu Idris, expressed appreciation for the intervention and prayed for continued support and further development initiatives in the area.
He also commended community leaders and residents for their cooperation throughout the RAP process, as well as the Compensation Committee for its diligence and effective collaboration.
Speaking on behalf of the Project Affected Persons, Abdulrashid Zakari Aliyu, popularly known as Mai Unguwan Zaria, and Sirajo Yusuf of Kwarin Dangoma, expressed appreciation for the compensation exercise.
They described the process from conception to implementation as transparent and informative, commending the Kaduna State Government for its commitment to delivering the project.
The beneficiaries also expressed gratitude to Governor Uba Sani for the intervention and pledged their support and cooperation towards the successful completion of the project.
The ACReSAL intervention is expected to contribute to reducing the impact of flooding and gully erosion while improving environmental resilience and protecting communities and property in Zaria.
