Kaduna State Government has announced plans to rehabilitate and renovate the Male and Female Medical Wards at the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH), Shika, Zaria.
The planned intervention followed an inspection visit to the hospital by a delegation led by the Executive Secretary of the Kaduna State Primary Health Care Board, Prof. Yusuf Jamoh.
A statement issued by Haruna Ibrahim, Head of Information and Public Relations, ABUTH Shika said the move was part of efforts to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and improve specialized medical services in the kaduna state.
Speaking during the inspection, Prof. Jamoh said the visit was a directive of Governor Uba Sani ahead of the commencement of the rehabilitation programme.
"The intervention formed part of the state government's broader plan to reform the healthcare sector by strengthening the link between primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare institutions." He explained.
Prof.Jamoh said preparations for the renovation would commence immediately, adding that relevant officials had been directed to begin work on the Bill of Quantities and other necessary project documents to ensure the speedy take-off of the project.
The Executive Secretary said while the government was investing in primary healthcare centres, there was also the need to strengthen tertiary institutions such as ABUTH, which receive patients requiring specialized treatment and referrals from lower levels of care.
“The programme is designed to complete the healthcare delivery chain by linking primary, secondary and tertiary institutions like ABUTH,” he said.
According to him, the intervention would also support medical research, the training of healthcare workers and the provision of specialised medical services.
The Chief Medical Director of ABUTH, Prof. Ahmed Hamidu Umdagas, described the proposed rehabilitation as a major intervention that would improve facilities for patients and further strengthen the relationship between the hospital and the Kaduna State Government.
“Quality healthcare does not end with functional primary and secondary facilities. It also requires tertiary hospitals equipped with modern facilities to provide specialised services and serve as referral centres,” Umdagas said.
The delegation also conducted a spot assessment of the Male and Female Medical Wards and inspected the hospital's Drug Quality-Control Laboratory.

They expressed satisfaction with the laboratory's equipment and personnel, noting that it has the capacity to test drug samples for active ingredients and detect contamination by harmful microorganisms.
