A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and close associate of the party’s national leader, Barrister Kabir Tanimu Turaki, Hon. Muttaka Balarabe Yakub (MBY), has alleged that the lingering crisis within the opposition party is being fueled by individuals who are receiving backing from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking with journalists in Abuja, MBY said the internal disputes currently affecting the PDP are not organic disagreements within the party but are being orchestrated by certain individuals working in the interest of the ruling party.
According to him, “The truth is that some of the crises being witnessed in the PDP today are sponsored by people who are enjoying the support of the APC-led government. Their aim is to weaken the only opposition platform capable of challenging the ruling party in the country.”
Muttaka Yakub specifically cited the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and former Jigawa State governor Sule Lamido, alleging that their actions are contributing to tensions within the party and undermining unity among its members.
He maintained that despite the ongoing disputes, the PDP remains the only political party with the structure and national spread capable of effectively challenging the current administration in future elections.
“The PDP remains the strongest opposition party in Nigeria today. With unity and proper leadership, we are confident that the party will overcome its internal challenges and emerge stronger ahead of the 2027 general elections,” he said.
Yakub also expressed optimism that the internal disagreements would soon be resolved through dialogue and party mechanisms, adding that the PDP would reposition itself to regain political power.
He further commended the leadership role previously played by Barrister Kabir Tanimu Turaki, describing him as a committed party stalwart who has contributed significantly to stabilising the party during critical periods.
According to MBY, Turaki still possesses the political experience and credibility required to contest for the national leadership of the party should he choose to do so in the future.
He added that the PDP must continue to rally around credible leaders and strengthen internal unity if it hopes to present a formidable challenge in the 2027 elections.
