Former Plateau State Governor Senator Simon Bako Lalong, has emphasized the crucial role of alumni associations in promoting national unity, peace, and sustainable development in Nigeria.
Speaking at the 18th Annual General Assembly (AGA) and Homecoming Events of the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Alumni Association held at the university’s main campus in Samaru, Zaria, Senator Lalong said alumni networks serve as bridges across ethnic, cultural, and professional divides, fostering mutual understanding and collective progress.
He noted that education, particularly in institutions like Ahmadu Bello University, remains a unifying force in Nigeria’s diversity, and urged graduates to go beyond academic achievements to contribute meaningfully to national development.
> “Our alumni communities cut across ethnic, cultural, and professional lines. Through them, we can bridge divides, foster dialogue, and advance national unity,” he said.
Lalong, who delivered the Pre-AGA Lecture, titled “The Role of Alumni in Promoting National Unity and Development,” argued that alumni bodies are vital instruments for civic responsibility, leadership development, and peacebuilding in a multi-ethnic society like Nigeria.
He called on the government, educational institutions, and alumni networks to strengthen partnerships that can address challenges such as insecurity, unemployment, and poverty.
The Minister of Defence, Muhammad Badaru Abubakar,, who chaired the Pre-AGA Lecture, said the Federal Government has made significant progress in addressing insecurity under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
He explained that new strategies have been introduced to ensure long-term peace and security while empowering young people through job creation and poverty reduction initiatives.
> “Security is not the government’s responsibility alone. Communities must also play active roles in ensuring peace and stability,” he said.
The Minister praised Ahmadu Bello University for its continued contribution to research, innovation, and leadership development, describing it as one of Nigeria’s foremost institutions driving national growth.
The Emir of Zazzau, Ambassador Ahmad Nuhu Bamalli, commended Ahmadu Bello University for being a model of academic excellence and a symbol of national cohesion.
> “Ahmadu Bello University remains one of Nigeria’s strongest institutions of integration. Its alumni continue to contribute significantly to national development,” the Emir said
In his remarks, the President of the ABU Alumni Association Worldwide, Malam Adamu Mamman Kontagora, expressed appreciation to the dignitaries and participants, pledging continued support for the university’s mission and vision.
He noted that the alumni body would intensify its efforts in promoting mentorship, youth empowerment, and educational advancement.
> “Our alumni network will continue to partner with ABU in fostering research, innovation, and leadership growth,” he said.
