The Deputy Chief Whip and Chairman, House Committee on Education, Kaduna State House of Assembly, Hon. (Barr.) Mahmud Lawal (Bola Ige), has declared open the Zaria Mock Nations Cup 2025/2026 Edition, organized under the Zazzau Youth Sports Development Initiative.
The colourful opening ceremony, held at Alhudahuda College Zaria, drew thousands of football fans, traditional leaders, and political dignitaries from across the state.
In his remarks, Hon. Mahmud Lawal said the essence of organizing the tournament is to foster unity, peace, and youth development across communities within Zazzau Emirate and beyond.
> “This initiative is not just about football; it’s about building friendship, discipline, and opportunities for our young people,” he stated. “We believe that sports can bridge divides, create hope, and channel youthful energy into positive engagement.”
The lawmaker, who is also the sponsor of the tournament, emphasized his commitment to continue supporting programmes that promote education, talent development, and social cohesion among the youth.
The opening match of the competition saw Angola play to a 1–1 draw with Libya in an exciting encounter that thrilled spectators and set the tone for the rest of the competition.
Among those in attendance were traditional rulers, political figures, and community leaders, including the Royal Father of the Day, Alhaji Abdullahi Sidi Bamalli (Sarkin Kasuwan Zazzau), and several special guests of honour from within and outside Zaria.
The tournament, which will run for several weeks, features teams representing different African countries, with the goal of promoting unity and sportsmanship among the youth of Zaria.
