The Union of Disengaged Local Government Staff in Kaduna State has commended the State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, for commencing the implementation of his promise to address the challenges facing workers disengaged by the immediate past administration of Governor Nasir El-Rufai.
The Chairman of the Union of Disengaged Local Government Staff, Alhaji Salisu Ibrahim Mahmud Dallatun Marafan Malaman Zazzau, expressed the appreciation while speaking on the development, saying the workers were delighted with the governor's recent efforts towards addressing their long-standing grievances.
Alhaji Salisu Ibrahim Mahmud recalled that Governor Uba Sani had, during his campaign, promised to look into the plight of the disengaged local government workers if elected, and said the commencement of the process was a demonstration of commitment towards fulfilling that promise.
The Union, however, appealed to the governor to extend his intervention to other important challenges confronting the disengaged workers, particularly the settlement of outstanding issues affecting those who have retired, as well as the upgrading of the new pension scheme to prevent unnecessary delays in the payment of retirement benefits.
The Chairman also commended the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dr Abbas Tajuddeen, for his efforts towards meeting the needs of his constituents through empowerment programmes, palliatives and other interventions. He, however, expressed concern that many members of the disengaged workers' union had not benefited sufficiently from such programmes.
Similarly, the Union appealed to the Chairman of Zaria Local Government Council, Engineer Jamilu Ahmad Jaga, to consider settling some outstanding debts owed to the disengaged workers from the period when they were still in service. Alhaji Salisu said many former workers were facing serious difficulties in providing for their families, while some had reportedly lost their lives under circumstances associated with extreme poverty.
The Union also commended the Emir of Zazzau, Ambassador Mallam Ahmad Nuhu Bamalli, for his continued concern and contributions towards the welfare of the disengaged local government workers. It said the Emir had consistently used his position to draw the attention of the government to the plight of the workers and seek assistance for them.
Alhaji Salisu Ibrahim Mahmud therefore called on all relevant authorities to sustain the intervention and ensure that the remaining challenges of the disengaged local government workers were addressed, describing the move as important to restoring hope and improving the welfare of the affected families.
