Speaking during the programme, Metron Safiya Magaji Ishaq delivered a lecture on birth preparedness, urging expectant mothers to plan adequately for childbirth and possible emergencies.
She explained that birth preparedness involves identifying a skilled birth attendant, choosing a health facility, arranging transportation, and making necessary financial and other preparations before labour.
Metron Safiya also advised pregnant women to attend antenatal care regularly and seek immediate medical attention whenever they notice danger signs during pregnancy.
She stressed the importance of husbands and other family members supporting women in making timely decisions and accessing healthcare services.
Participants said the programme provided them with new knowledge and helped change some of their previous beliefs and understanding about maternal and child health services.
They pledged to share the knowledge gained with their husbands, mothers-in-law, relatives and friends to encourage greater use of antenatal care and other health services.
The participants also acknowledged the use of Islamic teachings and Qur’anic references during the sessions, saying these helped them understand and accept the health messages more easily.
They called for sustained community sensitisation to ensure that more women and families benefit from accurate information on safe motherhood and child health.
The programme was organised by AMWA Faith and Cultural Champions to improve awareness among women and encourage safe motherhood practices in the community.
