A youth leader and public affairs analyst from Ang Barau in Ikara Local Government Area of Kaduna State, Malam Iliya Ang Barau Ikara, has called on communities, particularly those in rural areas, to revive the culture of communal self-help projects instead of depending solely on government for development.
Malam Iliya made the appeal while speaking with journalists on the increasing demands by communities for government intervention in the execution of projects. He said the time has come for rural dwellers to return to the inherited tradition of community development through collective efforts, describing communal projects as the most reliable alternative for addressing their immediate needs.
Assessing the performance of the present administration at the federal, state and local government levels, Malam Iliya observed that every government records both achievements and shortcomings. According to him, while some people have benefited from government policies and programmes, others are still waiting for meaningful development in their communities.
He acknowledged that the people of Ang Barau have benefited from the distribution of solar-powered street lights installed in various palaces and other public places through the efforts of the Member representing Ikara/Kubau Federal Constituency, Hon. Aliyu Damau. However, he expressed concern over the persistent lack of electricity supply and the poor condition of roads linking Ang Barau to neighbouring villages along the Soba Local Government axis.
Malam Iliya noted that over ninety percent of the people in the area depend on agriculture for their livelihood, stressing that the poor road network has continued to hinder the transportation of farm produce and economic activities. He urged the Kaduna State Government to give greater priority to the construction and rehabilitation of rural roads to improve the living conditions of the people.
The youth leader also appealed to elected representatives and political office holders at all levels to justify the confidence reposed in them by the electorate through the provision of people-oriented projects and responsive leadership. He further advised residents to remain law-abiding, support constituted authorities, and continue praying for peace, stability and the success of government programmes.
Some residents who spoke to our correspondent described the current situation in Ang Barau and neighbouring communities as challenging, citing inadequate infrastructure, poor roads and lack of electricity as major obstacles to development. They appealed to the relevant authorities to address their concerns while reaffirming their readiness to support communal initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of the people.
