Speaking during the 2026 Democracy Day celebration in Zaria, Kaduna State, Abbas said Nigeria's 27 years of uninterrupted democratic rule remains the longest period of civilian governance in the nation's history and a testament to the sacrifices made by pro-democracy heroes.
The Speaker paid tribute to late democracy icons, including M.K.O. Abiola, Kudirat Abiola, Shehu Musa Yar'Adua, Aminu Kano, Balarabe Musa, and Bala Usman, noting that the country's democracy was built on their sacrifices.
According to him, democracy remains the best system of government because it allows citizens to hold leaders accountable and effect change through the ballot box rather than violence.
Abbas cited several democratic milestones, including the peaceful transfer of power in 2015 and the increasing ability of voters to determine electoral outcomes across the country.
The Speaker also highlighted ongoing constitutional reforms by the 10th National Assembly aimed at strengthening governance and security.
He disclosed that lawmakers had advanced proposals on state policing, electoral reforms, local government autonomy, independent candidacy, and increased political participation for women.
He stressed that the reforms were designed to address insecurity, strengthen institutions, and deepen democratic governance.
On the nation's economy, Abbas expressed support for the policies of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, saying the administration inherited serious economic challenges but had begun laying the foundation for long-term prosperity.
He pointed to improvements in government revenue, foreign reserves, infrastructure development, student loans, healthcare expansion, and security funding as evidence that reforms were yielding results.
"As 2027 approaches, this is not the time to change course. The foundation is being laid for a stronger and more prosperous Nigeria," he said.
The Speaker urged politicians across party lines to conduct peaceful campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections and avoid exploiting ethnic, religious, or regional differences for political gain.
He also called on young Nigerians to actively participate in the democratic process by registering to vote, seeking elective offices, building businesses, and holding leaders accountable.
As part of activities marking Democracy Day, Abbas distributed motorcycles to 1,000 teachers drawn from primary and secondary schools across Zaria Federal Constituency.
He explained that the initiative was aimed at improving teachers' mobility and supporting the education sector, noting that no nation could rise above the quality of its teachers.
The Speaker urged beneficiaries to continue instilling values of honesty, patriotism, and hard work in future generations while educating students about the sacrifices made by Nigeria's democracy heroes.
He prayed for continued peace, unity, and progress in the country.
