A women advocacy organisation, Women Right Initiative (WORI), has called for renewed commitment from governments, institutions and communities toward promoting the rights, equality and empowerment of women and girls.
The call was made in a statement issued on Sunday by the Founder of the organisation, Laiatu Augustine Bamaiyi, to commemorate the 2026 International Women's Day.
In the statement, the group joined millions around the world in celebrating the achievements, resilience and leadership of women and girls while urging stakeholders to intensify efforts toward advancing gender equality.
The statement noted that the theme of this year’s celebration, “For All Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment,” highlights the urgent need for practical actions that will dismantle systemic barriers and ensure inclusive progress for women.
According to the organisation, despite significant progress recorded over the years, many women and girls across communities still face numerous challenges including limited access to quality education, economic inequality, underrepresentation in leadership and exposure to gender-based violence.
The group stressed that empowering women is central to achieving sustainable development, peace and economic growth, noting that societies prosper when women are educated, economically empowered and included in decision-making processes.
WORI therefore called for stronger policies to protect women’s rights and eliminate discrimination, increased investment in girls’ education and leadership development, equal economic opportunities for women and greater representation of women in political and decision-making spaces.
The organisation also urged stakeholders to intensify efforts toward preventing and responding to gender-based violence, stressing that true equality cannot be achieved if women and girls in rural, marginalised and conflict-affected communities are left behind.
It added that International Women’s Day should serve as a moment of accountability, calling on governments and institutions to translate commitments into concrete actions that will expand opportunities and guarantee a more inclusive future for women and girls.
