The Centre for Girls' Education commemorated the International Day of the Girl Child 2026 with a powerful call to end child marriage.
Speaking at the event themed "End Child Marriage and Invest in Girls' Rights,"the Director of the Centre, Hajiya Habiba Muhammad, said the day is a global reminder that the future of the nation depends on how we treat our girls.
She declared that child marriage is the biggest enemy of girls' education.
"When you educate a girl, you educate a nation. But when you marry off a girl at a tender age, you end her dreams, you end her education, and you end her future. Today we are saying no more. We must end child marriage and start investing in the rights, health and education of our girls," she said.
The Director noted that investing in girls means providing safe schools, scholarships, mentorship and protection from all forms of violence and abuse.
She called on parents, traditional rulers, religious leaders and government to join hands to protect every girl child and ensure she completes her education.
Hajiya Habiba Muhammad also encouraged the girls to be bold, to speak up against early marriage and to remain focused on their studies.
The event featured drama presentations, debates and inspirational talks by young girls who shared their dreams of becoming doctors, teachers and leaders.
The celebration ended with a pledge by all stakeholders to be ambassadors for girls' rights in their various communities.
