Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has called for stronger support from its alumni and other stakeholders as the institution marks its 64th anniversary.

The university, established on October 4, 1962, is celebrating 64 years of contributions to national, regional and global development.

Speaking on the anniversary, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Adamu Ahmed, expressed appreciation to parents, guardians, alumni and other well-wishers for sustaining the bond between the university and the wider society.

He also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as far-reaching reforms and strategic interventions in the education sector, noting that several of the initiatives had positively impacted the university.

The vice-chancellor particularly appreciated the university’s alumni, both individuals and organised groups, for their support to the institution in various ways.

He also acknowledged the Governors of Kaduna, Zamfara and Katsina states for their consistent engagement, support and commitment to addressing the university’s needs.

Prof Ahmed further appreciated the Emir of Zazzau for his fatherly guidance, as well as the Minister of Education, the Chancellor, Pro-Chancellor, members of the Governing Council and Senate, staff and students for their contributions to the growth of the university.

He said ABU had continued to make significant contributions to the development of Nigeria and the wider world since its establishment.

The vice-chancellor urged alumni and other stakeholders to sustain and increase their support to enable the university to remain committed to its mandate of serving the nation and humanity.

Recall that the establishment of ABU followed the recommendation of the 1959 Ashby Commission on Post-School Certificate and Higher Education for the creation of a university in Zaria to serve the then Northern Region of Nigeria.

The university was named after Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Sardauna of Sokoto and Premier of Northern Nigeria, who served as its first Chancellor and performed its opening ceremony on October 4, 1962.
