Former Senator representing Kaduna North Senatorial District, Senator Suleiman Abdu Kwari, has filed a suit before the Federal High Court in Abuja, seeking judicial intervention over the conduct of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) Kaduna North Senatorial nomination process and his alleged exclusion from the contest.
In a statement issued on June 19, 2026, Senator Kwari said the decision to approach the court was taken after careful consideration and exhausting available internal party mechanisms without achieving a satisfactory resolution.
According to him, having been duly screened, cleared, and certified eligible to participate in the Kaduna North Senatorial Primary Election, he entered the process in good faith and with confidence in the principles of internal democracy, fairness, transparency, and equal opportunity.
However, he noted that developments following the suspension of the primary election process raised concerns about compliance with the Electoral Act, the party’s constitution and guidelines, principles of natural justice, and the democratic rights of aspirants and party members.
The former senator stated that among the issues that prompted the legal action were concerns over the suspension of the primary process, inadequate notice regarding subsequent developments, the exclusion of duly cleared aspirants, unresolved appeals, and the affirmation of a candidate despite the absence of consensus among all contestants.
He maintained that the concerns extend beyond personal grievances, describing them as issues that touch on the integrity of internal party democracy and the right of party members to freely choose their candidates through a transparent and competitive process.
Senator Kwari revealed that before resorting to litigation, he pursued available internal party channels and repeatedly called for fairness, clarity, and adherence to due process. He said those efforts failed to yield a satisfactory outcome, leaving judicial intervention as the only lawful option available.
He emphasized that the lawsuit should not be viewed as an attack on the ADC, a party to which he remains committed, but rather as an effort to strengthen the party by ensuring that its constitution, guidelines, and democratic principles are respected.
According to him, political parties remain the foundation of democratic governance, warning that inconsistent application of party rules and restrictions on fair competition weaken democratic institutions.
The former lawmaker further observed that concerns expressed by several governorship, senatorial, House of Representatives, and House of Assembly aspirants across Kaduna State regarding aspects of the primary election process underscore the need for political parties to recommit themselves to the principles of internal democracy and equal treatment.
He therefore called on his supporters and well-wishers to remain peaceful, law-abiding, and respectful of the judicial process while expressing confidence that the courts would consider the matter fairly and impartially.
Senator Kwari reiterated his commitment to democracy, good governance, and the advancement of both the ADC and Nigeria, expressing hope that justice would ultimately prevail.
