The Zazzau Emirate Council has resolved an inheritance dispute involving members of the Matarawa community in Kudan District and warned traditional leaders across the emirate against acts of exploitation and injustice toward vulnerable people.
This was contained in a statement issued by the Media and Publicity Officer of the Zazzau Emirate, Abdullahi Aliyu Kwarbai, following the conclusion of deliberations by the Emirate Council under the leadership of the Emir of Zazzau, His Highness Malam Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, CFR.
According to Abdullahi Aliyu Kwarbai, the case came before the council for the third time under the Emirate’s Alternative Dispute Resolution mechanism and centered on allegations that some rightful heirs were denied their inheritance while others who were not entitled to the estate allegedly benefited from the sharing of the deceased’s property.
He explained that after a detailed review of the matter, the council ordered the immediate suspension of the village head linked to the dispute and directed that all funds wrongly distributed to ineligible persons be recovered.
Abdullahi Aliyu Kwarbai further stated that the recovered funds were presented to the Emir of Zazzau, who handed them over to the District Heads of Kudan and Hunkuyi with instructions to return to Matarawa community and supervise a fresh and fair distribution of the inheritance in line with Islamic law as prescribed in the Holy Qur’an.
The statement added that the Emir of Zazzau used the occasion to issue a strong warning to district heads and village leaders across the emirate, urging them to closely monitor the conduct of village heads and their scribes in dealings with members of the public.
“The Emirate will no longer tolerate any act of cheating or exploitation against less privileged persons under their watch,” the Emir was quoted as saying in the statement issued by Abdullahi Aliyu Kwarbai.
The Emir also emphasized the importance of justice, accountability, and transparency among traditional rulers at the grassroots level.
The council reaffirmed its commitment to using traditional dispute resolution mechanisms to address community conflicts and protect vulnerable people from abuse of authority, the statement added.
