The Chairman of the Governing Council of the Federal University of Education (FUE), Zaria, Ambassador Baba Ahmad Jidda, OFR, has commended the Federal Ministry of Education and the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) for organising a three-day capacity-building retreat for members of governing councils of federal universities across the country.
A statement issued by Sani Lawal Maqarphy, Media aide to FUE Vice Chancellor said Ambassador Jidda described the retreat, held in Lagos from June 1 to June 3, 2026, as highly impactful and transformative, noting that it provided participants with valuable insights into effective university governance.
Speaking on behalf of participants at the event, Amb Jidda praised the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, and the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, for their commitment to strengthening governance and leadership within Nigeria’s higher education sector.
The retreat brought together Pro-Chancellors, Vice-Chancellors and members of Governing Councils from federal universities nationwide. Participants were exposed to presentations by renowned scholars and experienced university administrators on emerging issues and best practices in university governance.
Jidda also lauded the resource persons for their insightful presentations, saying the sessions underscored the importance of knowledge-based leadership and the need to move away from ad hoc approaches to institutional governance.
He advocated the institutionalisation of the retreat as an annual programme to ensure continuous capacity development for governing council members and other university stakeholders.
The FUE Zaria Council Chairman further called for the harmonisation of the tenure of Governing Council members with that of Vice-Chancellors by extending council tenure from four to five years. According to him, such a measure would promote continuity, strengthen institutional memory and enhance stability in university administration.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Federal University of Education, Zaria, to applying the lessons learnt from the retreat in order to strengthen governance structures and contribute meaningfully to the advancement of higher education in Nigeria.
